Planning for Coastal Public Access in the San Antonio Bay Area  — Stakeholder Meeting: 10 a.m. to noon

Following up on one of the priority issues identified in the Planning Workshop held on October 31, 2012, the San Antonio Bay Partnership will host a second stakeholder meeting to solicit input on the current efforts to develop a Coastal Public Access Plan for the San Antonio Bay area. Information on current and potential public access sites, and issues related to public access planning, in the San Antonio Bay area will be solicited.  Information will be presented on how to provide site information using Google Earth as a stakeholder input tool.

Additionally, at this meeting, plans will be made to hold a public meeting in March or April, at na location on San Antonio Bay, to solicit additional input.  Those with interest in, and information on, coastal public access in the San Antonio Bay System are urged to attend.

Nominating Sites for NOAA/Sea Grant Habitat Restoration Project Inventory:  noon to 1:30 p.m.

A request for nominations for hydrological restoration projects has been issued by a regional partnership between the NOAA Restoration Center and the Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant College Programs.  The goal is to, first, develop an inventory of potential restoration projects that remove or modify anthropogenic barriers to restore tidal estuarine and freshwater exchange to benefit coastal and marine fisheries habitat; this inventory would be shared with groups that fund on-the-ground restoration, and used to help select several projects which would be eligible for funding in 2013 thru the NOAA Restoration Center and the Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant College Programs.  Karen Bishop, a Sea Grant Research Assistant, met with SABP stakeholders on January 10th to provide information on the program, including the inventory process,  the April 2013 funding opportunity and the criteria for identifying and prioritizing projects (available here).

Using the information in the SABP inventory of potential habitat protection, restoration and enhancement sites within the San Antonio Bay System, the meeting participants identified several sites and potential projects which would qualify for listing on the inventory and the potential funding award.  Efforts are underway to prepare a submittal package on those sites.  The status of these efforts and any need for additional information will be discussed at this meeting.
