Did you know that Texas aquifers and rivers are declining in fresh water and that if no action is taken, the state could face severe water shortages in 40 to 50 years?

Multiple important sectors in Texas seek to use that water. Sixty percent of the state’s available fresh water goes to farming, ranching, and agricultural industries. The remaining forty percent goes to produce energy, provide urban and residential needs, and sustain the environment.

Amid these essential needs, the state has been experiencing extreme weather events and long-term droughts, driving additional stresses on the state’s freshwater system.

On the front lines of our water scarcity is Texas’s unique environment that supports a wide variety of plant and animal species that sustain the state economically and recreationally and make this a great place to live and work.

The state has over 6,000 species of plants, and more than 425 of those species are endemic and are found nowhere else. But, wildlife and plants are dependent on naturally occurring freshwater sources. For example, 258 fish species that inhabit fresh water for at least a part of their lives.

Yet, Texas Parks and Wildlife estimates 25 percent of native freshwater fish species of conservation concern or already extirpated. In addition, the iconic and rare Whooping Crane that winters over in Texas has been hit hard by the water shortage, with some individuals dying due to lack of access to fresh water.

Join this informative webinar to hear about one of the most challenging problems facing Texas’s future and learn about some innovative solutions. By being informed and working together, we can ensure a positive future for Texas.
